What is Boho Style?

Boho, short for bohemian is a style that was popular in the mid 1950’s and 1960’s in north Kensington, England, inspired by the Bohemians and deemed as a unique way of dressing. It resurfaced in 2004-2005 when actress Sienna Miller sported the look in the Glastonbury Festival in 2004.

This look is associated with layers, chunky and beaded pieces, flowing skirts, patterns and clothes in earthy or bright colors. Modernized, it is called Boho-Chic, a female oriented way of styling that is a combination of Bohemian style of London and the Hippie culture of the United States.

How to get that Boho Style

It’s cute and trendy and if you plan to sport this fashionable look, here are 5 great accessories to give you the unconventional Boho Style!

Boho ladies just sport simple hair, usually they just let their hair down.  Hair embellishments that range from turbans to flower crowns to headbands are worn.  They are designed with beads, feathers, flowers or ribbons and they are worn to add glamour and fashion.

Printed Maxi Skirt or Dress

Maxis are probably the signature items for the Boho-Chic look.  Any woman wearing these dresses or skirts are automatically deemed unique and Bohemian!  These are flowing, layered but simple and elegant pieces.  They come in different patterns and if you want to be more Boho, choose the geometric or nature inspired ones.

Tunics are lose fitting tops that are really chic and versatile. You can wear them with skirts and different types of jeans, leggings or shorts. When you opt to wear  with a skirt, the skirt should be longer than the tunic, with a maxi skirt being a good choice.

Flared jeans

Flared jeans were originally known as Bell Bottoms and have been in the market since the 60’s. These are jeans that are tighter fitting in the thigh and the upper leg.  When you look at them from the back, they kind of resemble a bell shape.  But the ones manufactured in the 1960’s to the 70’s had looser fit in the upper leg and thigh area.  This can go with a nice looking Tunic.

Chunky Jewelry

To complete the Boho-Chic look, eye catching jewelry accessories should make it to your wardrobe!  Remember, it is about being unconventional so the bolder the better!  Dangling earrings, necklaces with wooden pieces, bracelets and ankle jewelries with combinations of medium to large sized beads.  In case you are wondering, yes beads is a favorite.

  7. You are so right on.. that type of print, at least in the tops and the skirt.. is definitely coming back and I really like them.. for tops at least. I can’t pull off the skirts usually as they don’t have them in my length, typically.

I am tall as well and skirts don’t work for me either. I wear the tops with leggings, and work great.

I grew up in the 60’s and loved the flared pants. I had some pretty wild print ones! Didn’t know it was considered Bohemian.
