5 Steps to Organizing Your Jewelry

Pile it Up!

Jewelry is a difficult thing to keep organized. We collect and accumulate jewelry for years, and it doesn’t go out of style. Therefore, we tend to keep it all, and become overwhelmed with how to organize our amazing stash. The first step is to know and see all the pieces you have. Gather all your jewelry and spread it all out on a table or bed (or the floor) .

Sort By Purge And Keep

Sort and identify the broken pieces that cannot be repaired. Create a purge pile for them. Sort the remaining based on what you wear often, what you haven’t worn in the last twelve months and what you never wear, but to which you are sentimentally attached. Purge what you haven’t worn in the last twelve months. Give thought to how best to purge your pieces. Donate them or create a special DIY item to give the pieces new life. Sort By Item Type

Once you have your keep pile, it’s time to sort by item. This will help you realize what type of storage you will need.

Possible categories to consider:

  • Bracelets
  • Short Necklaces
  • Long Necklaces
  • Statement Necklaces
  • Rings
  • Watches
  • Post Earrings
  • Dangle Earrings

Knowing what you have helps determine what type of storage containers will work.

Choose Storage

It is best to complete the first steps before you purchase or plan jewelry storage. Once you know the kinds of storage you need, scour pinterest for ideas or visit a local container store. There are many fun DIY ideas for jewelry storage. I think most people are looking to create more space when they organize jewelry and so, hanging it on the wall is a great way to make more space and keep things organized.

If you have gone to the store with a list of what you own (and how many of each) it is so much easier to shop. This blog has super ideas for buying or making.
